Some general notes
A domain is like the address of your apartment or house. If a potential customer knows this address, then he can go to this address without detours and visit you. If he does not know your address, he must try to find out where you live.
A domain always consists of a name and a domain extension. Domain extensions are .com for commercial or .de for Germany. The good thing is that every domain name is unique. The domain page4.de exists only once. However, you can switch to another domain extension, because each domain name can occur once per domain extension. That's why we reserved the domain page4.com for ourselves and had page4.me before (me is also a domain extension and relatively cheap to have).
If possible, you should at least reserve the important domain extensions for your website name. If you can, because you can only get a de domain if you have a German address. The sense of multiple domain extensions is clear. Let's say you own the domain "www.dein-friseur.de" but the domain "www.dein-friseur.com" has already been reserved by another hairdresser. If someone knows your domain, but makes a typo and enters the com domain instead of the de domain, he will end up on your competitor's website. Or maybe on a page with adult content. That would certainly not be in your interest. Fortunately, a website can have multiple domains. And the annual fees are reasonable. If you are looking for a new domain, you should always check which other domain extensions might already be occupied with the name you want.
What is a subdomain?
If you have a free page4 site, the web address will look like this: "my-whatever-name.page4.com" or for the international version "my-whatever-name.page4.me".
You know the address "page4.com". This is our own homepage. In front of this domain is the name of your homepage, separated by a dot (.). Such an addition to a domain is called a "subdomain".
The subdomain is also used to link to special areas of the homepage. For example, on our new website you can see that the help is displayed under the subdomain "help". The difference is that between this subdomain and the main domain there is a "de". So you can "string" subdomains together, separated by dots.
Subdomains do not have to be registered and therefore do not cost a fee. This is the reason why a free service like the one offered by page4 can be offered, because it is possible to assign as many subdomains as you like without any effort. The only cost is that each website naturally needs a place and servers must be available for it.
Free version of page4
When you use a free version of page4, you do not have your own domain. Instead, we provide you with a subdomain that you can freely choose. The subdomain is unique, no matter which main domain we associate with it.
Purchase versions of page4
Unfortunately, it is not possible to use subdomains in addition to your domain. The pages of your homepage can always be displayed only as an addition to the domain. If your domain is "own-name.com" and you have created a page "help", then this page will be displayed together with your own domain as follows: "own-name.com/help.html" provided that you have assigned an alias name. It is not possible to put "help" as a subdomain in front of your own domain.
How can I use a real domain with Page4?
You can use your own real domains with any purchased version of Page4. When ordering, you usually specify which domain you want to use. Regardless of this, you can always add more domains to your website. If you use more than one domain, we need to know which domain should be the main one.
Notice:
With a free version you cannot use your own domain. Linking to an external domain is not allowed.
Use a "real" domain
As already mentioned, having your own domain has a lot of advantages. The visitors of your website will reach you via a meaningful address. Your web presence looks more serious, especially if you have a business website. People can (hopefully) already tell from the name of the domain what your website is about. And finally an own domain is shorter, because nearly all free web building kits only allow subdomains in the free version, which means that a domain of the provider is still "attached" to your desired name.
The most important domain extensions in the German-speaking area are the following:
de = Germany. For all those who have a German domicile.
at = Austria. For users who live in Austria.
ch = Switzerland. For Swiss citizens.
Other domain extensions:
com = for commercial website, freely accessible for everyone
org = for non-commercial organizations and associations, freely accessible for everyone
info = for general information, freely accessible to everyone
int = for international organizations
eu = for Europe
net = originally for network management organizations, now free for everyone
biz = for companies
It is now allowed to have german umlauts in a domain name. So you can order a domain like www.mückenstich.de now too
How do I order a new domain?
You can use as many domains as you like for any purchase version of Page4.
As a customer, please order your new additional domain informally by sending an email to service@page4.com. An online order is currently not possible. After receiving your order we will create an invoice. In this invoice you will find the domain you ordered as well as our bank details.
When will I receive my new domain?
I already have a domain with another provider.
If you already have your own domain with another provider, you should decide to change providers. This means that your domain moves from your current provider to our service provider. For most domains, the transfer (provider change) is possible via the so-called AuthCode. This code is requested from the responsible provider and you then send us the code preferably by e-mail. Please note that anyone who has access to this code can transfer your domain. Make sure that you send the code to our email service@page4.com.
Once we have received the fee for your page4 contract or for the domain in question, we will initiate the transfer of the domain using the code you provided.
Depending on your chosen domain extension (.de, .com, .eu etc.) you will receive an invoice for your order.
Please check the invoice if the domain is spelled correctly, because with this spelling we will order the domain after receipt of payment and register it on your name and link it to your page4 website within 12-48 hours. A subsequent name change is associated with costs.
