When we talk about image sizes here, we mean the dimensions of the images, i.e. the width and height in pixels (px). The file size in kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB) depends on the dimensions. On the other hand, it also depends on the subject and how strongly you have compressed the image and in which format you save it.
Header images
Header images can have a maximum height of 500 px and the width of a page can occupy a maximum of 1,500 px. The maximum size of a header image should therefore be 500 x 1,500 px. However, you should not use this size across the board. It always depends on how you design your page. If you know that your header will have a width of 1,000 px and a height of 450 px, then the image should only be this size. If the image is not the size you set as the area, then only a section of the image will be displayed.
Header images in outside stripe
The outer area of a header can have a maximum height of 500 px. The width, on the other hand, depends on the screen on which the web page is displayed. Most screens have either HD or UHD resolution. This means that the width varies between 1,920 px and 2,560 px. So the optimal size would be 2,650 x 500 px. Then the image will be displayed completely on a UHD screen and on a HD screen parts of the image will be cut off on the left and right, provided you set the placement to "centered". If the image is higher than 500 px, only a section is displayed.
Background image
How large the background is displayed depends on the screen on which the web page is displayed. Most screens have either HD or UHD resolution. This means the size varies between 1,920 x 1,080 px and 2,560 x 1,440 px. So a size of 2,650 x 1,440 px would be optimal. Then the image will be displayed completely and in the best quality on a UHD screen and simply scaled down on an HD screen. For this, the "Cover" setting should be used, which ensures that the image is always automatically adjusted. All our images from the archive have this resolution for the background and none is larger than 1 MB.
Content images
The width of a web page can be max. 1.500 px. If you don't use a sidebar and place an image on your page in a single column across the entire web page, then the image can be displayed at a maximum width of 1,500 px. The height is unlimited, because you can scroll. But normally you will have a web page that is max. 1.000 px wide and maybe use a sidebar. Images for the content can therefore be much smaller than for the design. We also limit the max width in a content to 1,500 px and the height to 2,000 px. to prevent images from being displayed too large.
So you will rarely need images wider than 1,000 px or taller than 1,500 px. Think beforehand where you want to embed your images and how much space you have. This way you can upload optimized images right away.
